          "Houten kist met een heliotroopuitrusting voor het bepalen van richting. De uitrusting bestaat uit een stelplank, een vizier, een stelschroef, een hamer, een heliotroopspiegel met los diafragma en een losse heliotroopspiegel. Dit type instrument is in 1829 door Bertrand ontworpen. Op een richtpunt (ver van een standplaats) werd dit hulpmiddel zodanig geplaatst dat zonlicht via de spiegel in de richting van de standplaats werd teruggekaatst. Er moest wel tijdens de meting doorlopend iemand bij dit instrument staan die d.m.v. een houten hamertje de spiegel de juiste stand tikte, waardoor tijdens de meting de weerkaatsing van het zonlicht gericht blijft op de standplaats van de theodoliet."
