          "Ir. J. Gerritsma aanvaardde op 31 mei 1961 in het openbaar het ambt van gewoon hoogleraar in de scheepsbouwkunde, in de afdeling der Scheepsbouwkunde en Vliegtuigbouwkunde, met een rede, getiteld „Scheepssnelheid en Scheepsbewegingen\". \n\nJelle Gerritsma werd op 2 september 1924 te Rotterdam geboren. In Groningen en 's-Gravenhage volgde hij het middelbaar onderwijs; in laatstgenoemde plaats behaalde hij in 1942 het einddiploma h.b.s.-B. Hij studeerde vervolgens aan de Technische Hogeschool te Delft en verwierf aldaar op 9 juli 1952 het diploma van scheepsbouwkundig ingenieur. \n\nVan 1942 tot 1945 was hij tekenaar-constructeur bij de Noordelijk Economisch-Technologische Organisatie te Groningen, waarvan prof ir. L, H. de Langen directeur was. In 1946 trad hij als diens particulier assistent op. Van 1949 tot 1953 was hij assistent van het Delfts Hogeschoolfonds bij prof ir. J. W. Bonebakker. Vervolgens trad hij in dienst van de Technische Hogeschool te Delft en was werkzaam bij het laboratorium voor Scheepsbouwkunde, eerst als wetenschappelijk ambtenaar, daarna als wetenschappelijk ambtenaar l e klasse en als wetenschappelijk hoofdambtenaar. Sinds 1955 was hij leider van dit laboratorium. Sedert 1958 was hij belast met een onderwijsopdracht in de theorie van de scheepsbewegingen. \n\nHij is lid van de Commissie van Bijstand van het Nederlands Scheepsbouwkundig Proefstation en van de Werkgroep Zeegangsonderzoek van dit proefstation. Voorts is hij lid van de ,,Seakeeping Committee\" van de International Towing Tank Conference, van The Royal Institution of Naval Architects, van de Society of Naval Architects of japan en van de Vereniging van Technici op Scheepvaartgebied. Van zijn hand verschenen verscheidene publikaties."
